ReGAIT project organizes a Workshop at the International Conference on NeuroRehabilitation (ICNR2024)
In the framework of the ReGAIT projecst, a workshop were organized by UMH, the National Hospital for Paraplegics of Toledo (HNP), and the Institut Guttmann (IG) at the “International Conference on NeuroRehabilitation (ICNR2024)” held from November 5 to 8, 2024. The workshop «Innovative locomotion rehabilitation methodology incorporating neural Interfaces, spinal stimulation and enhanced metrics assessment by using exoskeleton technologies in SCI» shown the latest advances from each group on the development of an innovative rehabilitation strategy within the project for people with incomplete spinal cord injuries (iSCI) were presented to the audience, specifically focusing on improving locomotion.
UMH presented the development of a new type of brain-machine interface (BMI) that can intuitively interpret users’ intentions, allowing natural control of lower limb robotic systems. HNP described new metrics derived from sophisticated biomechanical analysis techniques to provide objective information on gait patterns and the underlying biomechanical and physiological mechanisms involved in the recovery process. IG explored innovative strategies for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) designed to improve locomotion by inducing neuroplasticity.
Additionally, during the workshop, a real-time demo was conducted by colleagues from Toledo using the software developed for biomechanical analysis. The workshop concluded with a round table discussion on the applicability of the protocol in patients in terms of instrumentation, trial duration, fatigue, and other limitations.
